Parents bring their children to the OCC seeking help for a wide range of issues. Many of our patients are referred to us by other healthcare professionals who look after children.
In the 12 months to October 2016, 19% of our new patients were recommended to seek support at the OCC by professionals including:
- Health visitors
- Paediatricians or hospital clinics
- Lactation consultants
This group was the second biggest referral source, after friends/family/word of mouth.
Osteopaths are able to spend a significant amount of time with each patient. At the OCC, really taking the time to listen to our patients and their advocates, as well as physically examine our patients, is a key part of what we do.
An osteopath at the OCC is trained in examination, diagnosis and appropriate treatment of children, and will consider all aspects of development and health in assessing one of our young patients. This includes making onward referrals to other medical facilities where needed.
We see children of all ages, from those newly adapting to life outside the womb including babies in a hospital neonatal unit. We also see many toddlers who are enthusiastically exploring the world around them; school children learning in new environments and through new activities and sports; and teenagers going through enormous physical and emotional changes, as well as educational pressures.
